Abortion rights groups plan to march in Mexico City on Friday, September 28, to demand the legalization of abortion. Participants are expected to gather at Monumento a la Madre at 15:30 (local time) and march to El Zócalo. Other related demonstrations are planned in Ciudad Juárez beginning at 18:00 at El Monumento a Juárez; in Matamoros beginning at 19:00 in the El Parque Cultural Olímpico; as well as in Monterrey, Puebla, and Oaxaca. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected near all demonstration sites.

Context

Abortion remains a controversial issue in Mexico. While the legality of abortion services varies by state, federal law only allows the termination of pregnancy in the event of rape.
