Deadly flooding in Michoacán due to heavy rain ongoing since September 23; further rain forecast throughout the southwest September 25

Intense rainfall in the southwest of the country ongoing since the evening of Sunday, September 23, has resulted in major flooding in the state of Michoacán. At least six people have been killed and nine others reported missing. State authorities have asked the federal government to declare a state of emergency and the military has been deployed to assist with search-and-rescue and clean-up operations.

The Mexican weather service SMN has forecast further heavy rainfall for the southwest and south of the country, including Michoacán, for September 25. As such further flooding as well as landslides are possible in the coming hours.

Individuals in the southwest, notably Michoacán, are advised to follow weather reports, avoid areas directly impacted by flooding, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
