Mexico: Student protest march in Mexico City September 13

A student protest will be held in Mexico City on Thursday, September 13, to demand increased security on campuses, among other issues. Demonstrators will gather at the National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropología) beginning at 16:00 (local time) and march to Plaza de la Constitución (a.k.a. the Zócalo, Mexico City’s main square). Significant traffic disruptions are possible in the vicinity of the march route. Clashes between protesters and security forces, and other violent incidents, cannot be ruled out.

Employees of the UNAM university in Mexico City (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) will hold a related strike September 13-14. Further strikes will occur on September 26 - to commemorate the 43 student protesters kidnapped and presumably killed in Iguala in 2014 - and on October 2 - to commemorate the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre. Associated marches are also possible on these days, both in Mexico City and elsewhere in the country.
