On the early afternoon of Wednesday, September 12 (local time), a fire broke out in the City Star Hotel in downtown Yangon - on Maha Bandoola Garden Street, Kyauktada township - slightly injuring 14 people. Seven foreign tourists are among the injured.

Hotel infrastructure and safety procedures in this developing country generally remain far below Western standards.

On a separate note, foreign nationals traveling to Myanmar must obtain a visa prior to departure. One should apply at the nearest Burmese embassy or consulate well in advance of travel.
