Nepal: Rally for justice in Kathmandu September 17

Peaceful rally held in Kathmandu to press authorities to more severely sanction perpetrators of sexual aggressions

Informational

Event

On Monday, September 17, thousands of people - under the citizens' initiative #JusticeForNirmala - demonstrated peacefully in the capital Kathmandu to ask the government to take more severe actions against the perpetrators of sexual aggressions and homicides. Protesters gathered in the afternoon (local time) at Maitighar Mandala and marched towards New Baneshwar. No related incidents were reported, with the exception of increased road traffic congestion in the city.

Advice

On a related note, individuals visiting Kathmandu, especially areas popular with foreign nationals (e.g. Thamel, Sanepa, Kupondo), should be cautious when walking around due to a significant risk of assaults and robberies, notably at night. Report any suspicious behavior, crimes, or misdemeanor to the local police.
