Sindhi authorities will deploy a major security contingent to protect Muharram processions in Sindh province, taking place September 12-21 in 2018. Some 70,000 policemen and 7000 Rangers will be deployed through the province, including 17,000 policemen in Karachi and 16,000 in Hyderabad. A total of 3500 processions - including 320 considered "most sensitive" - are programmed.

Context

Muharram is a month of remembrance for Shi'a Muslims, who mourn from the first night of Muharram and continue for ten nights, climaxing on the 10th of Muharram, the Day of Ashura. In Pakistan, in 2018, the period begins with the Islamic New Year on September 12, with Ashura observed on September 21.
