Peru: Demonstration planned in Lima September 18

Demonstration to take place at Plaza San Martín (Lima) September 18; heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions expected

Warning

Event

A demonstration is slated to take place at 17:00 (local time) at Lima's Plaza San Martín on Tuesday, September 18. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected near the protest site. Similar demonstrations are possible in Lima in the coming days.

Context

President Martín Vizcarra has reportedly called for the protest to push for congressional support for a set of anti-graft reforms broadly supported by Peruvians concerning laws for selecting prosecutors and judges, legislative structure, and campaign finance rules. On September 16, Vizcarra called for a vote of confidence over the anti-graft bills; if the congressional vote results in a motion of no confidence for Vizcarra's cabinet, he is constitutionally able to dissolve the Congress and schedule fresh congressional elections.

Advice

Individuals in Lima are advised to avoid the protest site and all related demonstrations, monitor developments to the situation, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
