Peru: University professors to hold 72-hour strike Sep. 18-20

University professors call for nationwide 72-hour strike from September 18-20; protest march planned in Lima September 20

Warning

Event

The National Federation of University Teachers of Peru (FENDUP) union is calling for a 72-hour nationwide strike by professors from Tuesday, September 18, through Thursday, September 20. On the first day of the strike, professors are planning to gather at the National University of the Center of Peru (UNCP) in Huancayo. Students and teachers will then march to Lima and gather outside the National Congress and the Ministry of Education on Thursday. Heightened security measures and traffic disruptions are anticipated around all protest sites.

Context

University professors are demanding an increase in salary and changes to university laws. A similar 48-hour strike was held earlier this year on July 17, but the protest was not widely supported.

Advice

Individuals in Peru, particularly in Lima, are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
