Romania: Constitutional referendum on October 7

Constitutional referendum on same-sex marriage to be held on October 7; demonstrations anticipated ahead of the vote

Warning

Event

A constitutional referendum will be held nationwide on Sunday, October 7. On that day, people throughout Romania will head to the polls to vote on a proposed constitutional amendment that would effectively ban same-sex marriage. Demonstrations by supporters and opponents to the amendment are likely throughout Romania, and especially in Bucharest, in the coming days and weeks. Clashes between the various groups are possible, as well as between protesters and security forces.

Context

In September, Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Liviu Dragnea announced that the referendum would be held on October 7, following pressure from the Coaliția pentru Familie civil society coalition which has sought to alter the definition of a family in Romania, de facto outlawing same-sex marriage.

Advice

Individuals in Bucharest are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
