South Pacific: Early Tropical Cyclone develops near Solomon Islands Sep. 27

Event

Tropical Cyclone Liua developed near the southern Solomon Islands as a Category 1 storm on Thursday, September 27, bringing heavy rains and possible flooding to the region. Although the Solomon Islands will bear the brunt of the storm, Vanuatu and New Caledonia are also forecast to experience rain and some thunderstorms in the coming hours. The cyclone is forecast to move westward into the Coral Sea on Friday and into the weekend. 

Context

Liua is the earliest tropical cyclone on record to form in the South Pacific Ocean. The cyclone season officially starts in the South Pacific on November 1.

Individuals present in the affected area are advised to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities (e.g. possible evacuation orders), follow local weather forecasts, and verify travel plans prior to setting out. In the event of flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
