US: Tropical storm watch issued for Guam September 28

Event

At approximately 15:20 (local time) on Friday, September 28, the US National Weather Service (NWS) issued a tropical storm watch for Guam and Rota. Tropical storm conditions, including sustained winds of 63 km/h (39 mph) or higher, are expected in the next 24 hours due to the passing of Tropical Depression 30W. The storm is expected to strengthen to a tropical storm by the morning of Saturday, September 29 as it passes south of Guam. Hazardous surf of up to 3 m (10 ft) is expected from Friday through Sunday night, September 30, along with dangerous rip currents and heavy rain of 5-10 cm (2-4 in). Flooding and transportation disruptions, including flight delays, are possible through the weekend.

Context

Tropical cyclones and typhoons are common in the western Pacific from June through November. This is the second such storm to affect Guam in the past week and the third in September.
