Cameroon: Major opposition candidates request annulment of Oct. 7 election

Event

On Thursday, October 11, all three major opposition candidates appealed to the Constitutional Court to annul all or part of the October 7 vote. All candidates cited incidents of voter fraud and vote-rigging, while Cameroon's election body denied all claims of election interference. The Constitutional Court is expected to rule on the petitions for annulment by Monday, October 22.

A continued heavy security presence can be expected throughout major urban centers, especially in Northwest and Southwest regions, in the coming days. Political demonstrations, as well as attacks by separatist militants, remain possible.

Context

In addition to the three petitions submitted by the candidates, 15 additional petitions for annulment were submitted by voters and minor candidates. The Catholic Church has also denounced election irregularities in Cameroon. These petitions follow the October 8 declaration of victory by former government minister, now opposition candidate Maurice Kamto. Despite irregularities, Paul Biya, Cameroon's president since 1982, is expected to win another term in the election.
