Cameroon: Movement restrictions ahead of October 7 presidential election
Movement restrictions announced ahead of presidential election on October 7, including land and sea border closures; heightened security expected

On Friday, October 5, Cameroonian authorities announced temporary movement restrictions banning all circulation of people and goods by land, rail, or air outside of urban centers or rural localities from 18:00 (local time) on October 6 to 18:00 on October 7, election day (security vehicles and ambulances excepted). Similarly, land and maritime borders will be closed through October 7, scheduled to reopen the day after the vote. International flights are not affected by the order. Various commercial activities will also be banned on the day of the election. All demonstrations and other public gatherings outside polling stations are also banned and are likely to be forcefully dispersed. An increased security presence can be expected throughout major urban centers and at polling stations on the day of the vote.
Context
Some 6.6 million electors are called to the polls to choose their next president. Candidates include current President Paul Biya, in office since 1982, and eight others. The main opposition party, Social Democratic Front (SDF), will be running Joshua Osih.
