Germany: Cologne-Frankfurt high-speed rail line closed through October 19 /update 2
High-speed line between Cologne and Frankfurt to remain closed through October 19 following October 12 fire
Event
The high-speed line between Frankfurt and Cologne is set to remain closed until Friday, October 19, after a technical fault caused a fire to erupt on an Intercity-Express (ICE) train on October 12. Deutsche Bahn, the national rail operator, has announced that trains between Cologne, Montabaur, and Frankfurt Airport are being diverted via the old Rhine line, with extended journey times of around 90 minutes expected. Trains traveling on this route will not make typically scheduled stops at Montabaur, Limburg Süd, or Siegburg/Bonn.
Increased congestion is expected as commuters seek alternate means of transportation.
Advice
Potentially affected travelers are advised to confirm the status of their trains prior to departure for the train station and prepare for longer travel times between Cologne and Frankfurt.
