Guam/Mariana Islands: Typhoon Yutu to affect islands October 24-26 /update 1

Event

As of 12:43 (local time) on Wednesday, October 24, Super Typhoon Yutu was located around 305 km (190 mi) east of Guam and moving northwest. While no landfall is forecast, Yutu is expected to bring damaging winds of up to 65 km/h (40 mph) and up to 10 cm (4 in) of rain to Guam October 24-26. Worse conditions are expected in parts of the Mariana Islands, where a typhoon warning is in effect for Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. Lower tropical storm warnings are also in effect for Guam as well as Alamagan, Pagan, and Agrihan (Mariana Islands).

In preparation for the adverse weather, government institutions, schools, and businesses are closing down. Certain flights have preemptively been canceled to and from Guam International Airport (GUM) and Saipan International Airport (SPN).

Individuals present in the abovementioned locations are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation and power disruptions, reconfirm flights, obey instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and avoid flood-prone areas until the situation stabilizes. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
