Iraq: Roadside blast kills two near Kirkuk October 21

Vehicle hit by roadside bomb in Kirkuk province on October 21; two people killed

Informational

Event

A roadside bomb detonated on a road between Nisan 7 and al Rashad, south of Kirkuk, on Sunday, October 21, killing two people. Officials have not identified the perpetrators, although Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for similar attacks in the area. A heightened security presence can be expected near the blast zone south of Kirkuk in the near-term.

Context

Although Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi claimed victory over the Islamic State (IS) in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in western and northern Iraq. IS militants continue to carry out attacks, notably against security forces. High-profile attacks often prompt equally significant security responses, including enhanced checkpoint operations and more proactive operations, with resulting effects on transit.

Advice

Individuals in Kirkuk province are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments. The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
