Warning

Event

The official electoral campaign period ahead of the November 7 presidential election will run from October 8 to November 5. During this period, an increase in political rallies and demonstrations, as well as associated transportation disruptions, is to be expected throughout the country, notably in the capital Antananarivo. Outbreaks of violent unrest cannot be ruled out.

The campaign period will take place in a tense political climate; 22 candidates have already claimed the vote will be marred by fraud, asserting that the electoral roll is not accurate and that candidates have been paying for votes.

Context

Candidates include incumbent President Hery Rajaonarimampianina. A total of 35 other candidates are also in the running, including three of Rajaonarimampianina's predecessors, Didier Ratisraka, Marc Ravalomanana, and Andry Rajoelina. A second round of voting will be held on December 19, if necessary.

Advice

Individuals in Madagascar, particularly in Antananarivo, are advised to monitor developments to the situation and to avoid all demonstrations due to the risk of violence.
