Mexico: Tropical Storm Tara skimming west coast Oct. 16-17 /update 2
Tropical Storm Tara expected to pass near the Colima and Jalisco coastlines October 16-17; flash flooding and landslides possible
Event
According to the US-based National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Tara was located approximately 40 km (25 mi) south-southwest of Manzanillo (Colima state) as of 04:00 (local time) on Tuesday, October 16. The storm is expected to continue traveling in a west-northwesterly direction along the coasts of Colima and Jalisco October 16-17, moving very close to shore and potentially making landfall. A tropical storm warning is currently in effect between Manzanillo and Cabo Corrientes. A lower tropical storm watch remains in effect between Manzanillo and Punta San Telmo.
Tara is expected to bring 13-25 cm (5-10 in) of total rainfall to Colima, western Jalisco, and the far west of Michoacán state, with rainfall of up to 38 cm (15 in) possible in areas of Colima and Jalisco. Strong winds are also forecast. Flooding, landslides, and associated transportation disruptions are possible.
Context
The Pacific Hurricane Season extends from May 15 to November 30 (and the Atlantic Hurricane Season from June 1 to November 30), with the largest concentration of storms typically occurring between August and October.
