Mexico: Tropical Storm Tara skimming west coast /update 1
Tropical Storm Tara expected to pass near the Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco coastlines October 15-18; flash flooding and landslides possible
Event
According to the US-based National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Tara was located approximately 165 km (105 mi) south of Manzanillo as of 04:00 (local time) on Monday, October 15. The storm is expected to travel in a west-northwesterly direction along the coasts of Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco states October 15-18 without making landfall. A tropical storm watch is currently in effect between Punta San Telmo and Cabo Corrientes.
Tara is expected to bring 8-13 cm (3-5 in) of rain to coastal areas of Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco through October 18, with rainfall of up to 20 cm (8 in) possible in isolated areas. Strong winds are also forecast. Flooding, landslides, and associated transportation disruptions are possible.
Context
The Pacific Hurricane Season extends from May 15 to November 30 (and the Atlantic Hurricane Season from June 1 to November 30), with the largest concentration of storms typically occurring between August and October.
