Mexico/US: Storm Sergio to make landfall in Baja Oct. 11-12
Storm Sergio forecast to hit southern half of Baja Peninsula (Mexico) October 11-12 before passing into the southwestern US
Event
Hurricane Sergio was located approximately 1960 km (1215 mi) west-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula as of 08:00 (local time) on Tuesday, October 9. According to the latest forecasts by the US-based National Hurricane Center, Sergio is expected to weaken into a tropical storm before making landfall in Baja California Sur state overnight October 11-12. The storm is forecast to then pass over the northwestern states of Sonora and Chihuahua on October 12 and into the US states of Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma on October 13, either as a tropical storm or a tropical depression.
No storm warnings are currently in effect but heavy rain, with the potential to result in flooding or landslides, and strong winds are to be anticipated in affected regions, along with associated transportation disruptions and power outages.
Context
The Pacific Hurricane Season extends from May 15 to November 30 (and the Atlantic Hurricane Season from June 1 to November 30), with the largest concentration of storms typically occurring between August and October.
