Paraguay: Clashes with Brazilian gang members in Triple Frontier area

Event

Clashes between National Police forces and heavily armed men, suspected members of the Brazil-based Comando Vermelho (Red Command) gang, broke out during a raid carried out in a rural area of Presidente Franco district (Alto Paraná department), on Wednesday, October 24. The district is located in the Triple Frontier area connecting Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil. Three gang members were killed in the raid, which occurred during the early morning hours, following which various weapons and explosives were seized. A car bomb reportedly containing 84 kg (185 lb) of explosives was safety detonated by security forces.

Police speculate that the gang members had entered the country from Brazil and were planning a major assault, potentially in the capital Asunción.

Context

Rates of violent crime are significantly higher in areas along the Brazilian border than in other parts of the country due in large part to the presence of drug traffickers and other transnational criminal organizations.
