South Africa: Storms bring flooding and traffic disruptions to Gauteng Oct. 13-14

Storms cause flash flooding and traffic disruptions in Gauteng province October 13-14; thunderstorms possible in North West, Free State, and Eastern Cape provinces October 14

Warning

Event

Severe thunderstorms reportedly caused flash flooding and road obstructions across Gauteng province on Saturday, October 13. A warning was also issued for flooding in Tshwane (Gauteng province) on Sunday, October 14, due to the storms. Additionally, thunderstorms may affect parts of North West, Free State, and northeastern Eastern Cape provinces over the coming hours. Consequent localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas, as well as resultant traffic disruptions.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions prior to setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that walking or driving through floodwaters can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
