South Africa: Train collision in Kempton Park October 4

320 people injured in train collision in Kempton Park (Gauteng province) on October 4; disruptions on the rail network likely

A train collision occurred at the Van Riebeeck station, located in Kempton Park (Gauteng province), around 17:50 (local time) on Thursday, October 4, injuring 320 people. A train that crashed into the rear of a stationary train was traveling from Johannesburg to Pretoria. An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the accident.

The United National Transport Union (Untu) has called on Transportation Minister to suspend Metrorail services until the rail operator is able to provide a safe and reliable service. For now, their calls have reportedly been ignored. Disruptions are nonetheless to be expected on train services in Gauteng province on October 5, and potentially into the coming days.
