Student protesters clashed with police near the RCN Radio network building in Bogotá on Thursday, November 8, wounding eight police officers and resulting in several students being arrested or going missing. The clashes come amid related protests in other areas of the country. The protests reportedly caused transportation delays in Bogotá and other affected areas. Context
Student and social groups called for a nationwide protest on November 8 over a bill that would increase taxes on foodstuffs and other consumer products. Prominent politicians from several parties joined with civil society groups in condemnation of the bill, including former President Álvaro Uribe, former Vice President Germán Varges Lleras, and left-wing politician Gustavo Petro.
University students and faculty launched a nationwide strike on October 12, after promises by the government to increase the education budget fell short of union demands. All 32 public universities in the country are expected to remain closed until further notice.
