Iraq: Flooding leaves seven dead, thousands displaced around Shirqat Nov. 23

Flash flooding leaves at least seven dead and thousands displaced around Shirqat (Salah Al-Din province) November 23; deadly flooding also reported in Dhi Qar province

Warning

Event

Flash flooding had left at least seven people dead and some 3000 people displaced around Shirqat (Salah Al-Din province) as of Friday, November 23. The floods reportedly come after unseasonably heavy rainfall fell on the area in recent weeks. Iraqi authorities also reported that at least two people had been killed after floods destroyed their home in southern Dhi Qar province. Potential further rainfall could exacerbate flooding conditions in affected areas.

Advice

Individuals in flood-affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
