Italy: Strong storms cause fatalities in northern Italy /update 1

Parts of northern Italy have been significantly affected by heavy rains and strong winds in recent days. According to government officials, at least 18 people have been killed from Tuesday, October 30, to Friday, November 2. Wind gales of up to 120 km/h (75 mph) brought down tens of thousands of trees in the Fiemme valley, blocking roads and causing power disruptions to some areas. Around 160,000 people lost power in the Dolomites mountain range (Veneto region) on Friday. The storms have also caused mudslides, blocking roads in the Veneto and Trentino regions. Other significantly impacted areas include Lazio, Campania, and Emilia-Romagna. Additional heavy rain and strong wind is expected to hit Italy in the coming days. Further transportation disruptions and power outages are possible.
