Further protest activity likely in Corvetto area of Milan, Italy, into at least early December in connection with fatal motorbike accident.
Protest activity will likely continue in Corvetto and nearby areas of Milan into at least early December in connection with the death of a young man in a traffic accident overnight Nov. 23-24. The accident reportedly occurred near the intersection of the city's Via Giuseppe Ripamonti and Via Bernardo Quaranta as the individual was attempting to evade a police pursuit while riding a motorbike. Protesters have gathered in the Corvetto area since shortly after the accident occurred to denounce the police's perceived involvement in the young man's death, with some vandalizing public buses and bus shelters, setting garbage receptacles on fire, and throwing firecrackers and bottles at police officers, who have responded with tear gas and charges to disperse crowds. Traffic disruptions have been reported in areas subject to protest activity, and police have made arrests in connection with the unrest.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain an increased security presence in Corvetto and nearby areas over the coming days to monitor any additional demonstrations that materialize. Transport and business disruptions will likely affect areas subject to protest activity and increased security. Police may close local roads on short notice to facilitate any further protest activity. Additional clashes between demonstrators and police are possible, and further acts of vandalism cannot be ruled out.
Avoid all protest activity as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in Milan, and consider taking alternative routes to circumvent any demonstrations and related disruptions. If violence breaks out in your area, immediately leave the vicinity and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
