Nepal to host Asia Pacific Summit in Kathmandu from November 30-December 3; heightened security presence and transportation disruptions, including flight delays, expected
Event
Kathmandu is hosting the Asia Pacific Summit from Friday, November 30, to Monday, December 3, with some delegates arriving Thursday, November 29. A heightened security presence and other security measures are expected in the city, including the deployment of 3500 security personnel. Members of the Nepalese Army, Armed Police Force, and National Intelligence Department (NID) are all assisting with security for the event. Airspace restrictions, including on the private use of drones, are possible. Increased security measures will be in place around the summit at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and at other dignitary locations, including the Dwarika Hotel, Hotel Yak and Yeti, and Hotel Soaltee.
Transportation disruptions are also expected in Kathmandu. Alternating odd-even license plate restrictions will be in effect to reduce traffic and facilitate movement of VIPs. Road closures, particularly from 10:00 to 14:00 (local time) on Saturday, December 1, are likely. Flight disruptions are also possible, and a heightened security presence is expected at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM).
Context
Leaders from across Asia, including Myanmar's Aung Sang Suu Kyi and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, are expected to attend the 2018 Asia Pacific Summit.
