Warning

Event

On Thursday, November 15, violent protests broke out in the town of Saldanha Bay (Western Cape province). Reports indicate some 5000 demonstrators took to the streets and burned down several buildings, including the Diazville Community Hall and a clinic. Additional security forces have been deployed to the area. In the neighboring town of Vredenburg, tensions subsided on Wednesday following violent demonstrations on November 13-14. Nevertheless, further protests and associated transportation disruptions are possible in the area in the coming hours and days. Clashes between demonstrators and police officers cannot be ruled out.

Context

Demonstrations broke out in Vredenburg on November 13 to demand the government improve access to electricity and water in the settlements. During the protest, at least 38 demonstrators were reportedly arrested by security forces, leading residents to stage further protests on November 14 to demand their release.

Advice

Individuals in the area are advised to monitor developments to the situation, anticipate localized transportation disruptions, and avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
