Vietnam: Tropical Storm Samuel to hit the south Nov. 24-25 /update 2
Tropical Strom Samuel (“Usagi”) to bring damaging rain and wind to southern parts of Vietnam November 24-25
Event
Tropical Depression Samuel (locally known as “Usagi”) is forecast to bring up to 50 cm (20 in) of rain and winds up to 100 km/h (60 mph) to southern Vietnam November 24-25. Landfall is expected between Qui Nhon (Bình Định Province) and Vung Tau (Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu Province). Associated flooding, mudslides, and damage are likely. The storm is expected to strengthen as it approaches southern Vietnam but is no longer expected to intensify into a typhoon. Authorities are on stand-by to evacuate thousands of people from low-lying coastal areas.
The storm is currently moving on a west-southwest track over the South China Sea, east of Ho Chi Minh City.
Context
Tropical cyclones and typhoons are common in the South China Sea from June through November. Central Vietnam was hit by Tropical Depression Toraji on November 18, which left 14 people dead and caused severe damage.
Advice
Individuals present in southern Vietnam are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation and power disruptions, reconfirm flights, obey instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and avoid flood-prone areas until the situation stabilizes. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
