India: Air quality concerns continue in New Delhi capital region Dec. 3 /update 1

Air quality in and around New Delhi remains at unhealthy levels as of Monday, December 3, with high pollutant levels forecast until Wednesday, December 5. Air quality across the area ranged from "poor" to "severe." As of 22:00 on Monday, Air Quality Index (AQI) stations in the area, from Greater Noida to Bawana to Ghaziabad, all had PM10 readings above 500, including 895 in northern New Delhi. PM10 readings above 430 are considered "severe" and outdoor exertion is considered dangerous for all people. Poor air quality is expected to persist in the near term, with particularly hazardous conditions continuing until Wednesday.

Authorities warn of potential health hazards associated with periods of high pollution, notably for certain vulnerable groups - e.g. children, seniors, pregnant women, and people suffering from asthma and other respiratory issues. Air pollution can also be harmful to cardiac health and increase risk of heart attack or stroke, particularly among high-risk individuals (e.g. those with preexisting heart conditions).

New Delhi is notoriously one of the world's most polluted cities. AQI is measured using PM10 and PM2.5 indices, which measure particulate levels 10 or 2.5 micrometers in diameter.
