Iraq: Car bomb attack in northern city of Tal Afar Dec. 25

Event

A car bomb attack occurred in Tal Afar (north of Iraq) on Tuesday, December 25, resulting in two people dead and a dozen others injured. The Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attack. This represents the first attack perpetrated by IS since the group was pushed out of the city in August 2017. Further related attacks cannot be ruled out.

Context

While Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi claimed victory over IS in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in western and northern Iraq, and IS militants continue to carry out attacks on security forces and Shi'a communities. High-profile attacks often prompt equally significant security responses, including enhanced checkpoint operations, and more proactive operations, with resulting effects on transit.
