Madagascar: Full provisional election results released December 27 /update 7

Madagascar’s Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) announced the full provisional results of the presidential election on Thursday, December 27. According to the initial results, former President Andry Rajoelina secured 55 percent of the vote over Marc Ravalomanana, who obtained over 44 percent. The High Constitutional Court (HCC) will have up to nine days to confirm the provisional results. Ravalomanana has denounced the election, claiming massive fraud, and called on his supporters to “defend” their vote. Political gatherings are possible; clashes between supporters of both parties are possible. Heightened security measures are likely in major urban centers, notably in the capital Antananarivo.

Context

The second round of the presidential elections opposing Andry Rajoelina to Marc Ravalomanana took place peacefully, with a low turnout, on December 19. The first round of presidential elections was held on November 7. According to the HCC, the participation rate was 53.95 percent.
