Madagascar: Protests in Antananarivo December 29 /update 8

Marc Ravalomanana, who obtained 44 percent of the votes during the December 19 presidential elections, has denounced the election, claiming massive fraud, and called on his supporters to "defend" their vote, notably by staging a protest in downtown Antananarivo on Saturday, December 29. Protesters are expected to gather at 10:00 (local time) near the city hall in the Analakely area of the capital. A heightened security presence, along with localized transportation disruptions are likely. Clashes between supporters and police forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Madagascar's Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) announced the full provisional results of the presidential election on December 27. According to the initial results, former President Andry Rajoelina secured 55 percent of the vote over Ravalomanana, who obtained over 44 percent. The High Constitutional Court (HCC) will have up to nine days to confirm the provisional results.

The second round of the presidential elections opposing Andry Rajoelina to Marc Ravalomanana took place peacefully, with a low turnout, on December 19. The first round of presidential elections was held on November 7. According to the HCC, the participation rate was 53.95 percent.
