Madagascar: Provisional election results released December 23 /update 6

According to provisional results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) on Sunday, December 23, presidential candidate Andry Rajoelina is in the lead with 55.06 percent of the vote, versus Marc Ravalomanana's 44.94, who alleged that the vote was marred with fraud. The official results expected to be released on January 9. Political gatherings are possible; clashes between supporters of both parties are possible. Heightened security measures are likely in major urban centers, notably in the capital Antananarivo.

Context

The second round of the presidential elections opposing Andry Rajoelina to Marc Ravalomanana took place peacefully, with a low turnout, on December 19. The first round of presidential elections was held on November 7. According to the HCC, the participation rate was 53.95 percent.
