Paraguay: Unions to stage indefinite demonstrations from March 2019

Labor unions announce plans to stage indefinite nationwide demonstrations beginning March 2019

Warning

Event

The National Multisectoral Coordinator (CNM) of Paraguay has announced labor unions will stage indefinite nationwide demonstrations against the government of President Mario Abdo Benítez beginning in March 2019. Organizers are calling for policies to address income inequality, indigenous rights, and to reduce economic barriers, such as taxes and debts, for farmers. Several labor unions are expected to participate in the protests, including the National Intersectoral Coordinator (CNI), the Central Union of Authentic Workers (CUT-A), unions for the Central Energy Administration, the National Union of Telecommunications Workers, and student unions. Heightened security measures and traffic disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the demonstrations should union leaders proceed with the protests.

Advice

Individuals in Paraguay are advised to anticipate localized transportation disruptions around protest sites and to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
