Peru: State of emergency in several departments due to heavy rain Dec. 21

On December 21, Peruvian officials declared a 60-day state of emergency due to heavy rains in the capital Lima, as well as in the Ancash, Arequipa, Ica, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Moquegua, Piura, and Tumbes departments. According to local sources, heavy rains in the regions have led to numerous landslides and flooding damaging multiple buildings and roads. Transportation disruptions are likely in affected areas. Rains are likely to continue in the coming days, which could cause the already hazardous conditions to deteriorate further.

Context

Heavy rain, along with associated flooding and landslides are likely to persist throughout the rainy season which lasts until March.

Individuals in affected areas are advised to follow weather forecasts and adhere to any advice issued by the local authorities. In the event of flooding keep in mind that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock an adult over.
