Tropical Cyclone Cilida forecast to approach Reunion December 21; heavy rainfall and damaging winds possible

Tropical Cyclone Cilida is forecast to approach Réunion island on Friday, December 21. As such, a pre-cyclone alert has been issued on Thursday evening, December 20 (local time). As of Friday, the cyclone is located about 705 km (438 mi) from the island, bringing sustained winds of 240 km/h (150 mph) and moving southwestward at 11 km/h (6 mph). Cilida is not forecast to make landfall on the island, however, heavy rain is expected. A strong swell alert has also been issued. Consequent transportation disruptions (e.g. flight disruptions and road closures) and power outages cannot be ruled out.

Context

Réunion experiences an annual cyclone season from November through April, during which time tropical storms and torrential rain can result in significant material damage.

Advice

All those present in Réunion are advised to follow local forecasts, confirm travel reservations, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. Be prepared to leave immediately if an evacuation order is given; otherwise, remain indoors until authorities have indicated that the storm has passed. Distance yourself from natural bodies of water and be aware that hotels and airports may close in the event of a storm alert.
