Taxi drivers to stage protest in Seoul December 20; plan alternative mode of transportation

Warning

Event

Members of the Korean Federation of Taxi Worker's Unions are planning to stage a massive demonstration in Seoul on Thursday, December 20, against the planned launch of the Kakao T ride-sharing service. Around 100,000 protesters are expected to gather at the National Assembly building at 14:00 (local time). Protesters will also hold a memorial at the building for a taxi driver who died after self-immolating on December 10 in an apparent protest to the service's launch. A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions are anticipated in the area.

Advice

Individuals in Seoul are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution and allow for extra time to reach their destinations.
