South Korea: Two cases MERS-CoV reported as of late December

Event

South Korean health officials have reported two cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) as of late December. According to local sources, the two patients presented symptoms of the disease after returning from Turkey and the UAE are currently being treated in Iksan (North Jeolla province).

Context

Known disease vectors of MERS-CoV transmission include camels and, in rare cases, other humans. Symptoms of MERS-CoV include acute respiratory issues (e.g., shortness of breath), fever, cough, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. No vaccine is currently available.

Individuals in South Korea are advised to take the necessary measures to protect themselves against contact with individuals suspected of carrying the illness. People exhibiting the above symptoms are advised to seek immediate medical attention.
