Thailand: Air pollution reaching hazardous levels in Bangkok Dec. 21

Air quality deteriorates to harmful levels throughout the capital city ; situation expected to worsen on December 22

Warning

Event

According to the Thai Pollution Control Department, the amount of fine particles in the air has reached harmful levels in most of Bangkok districts as of the morning of Friday, December 21 (local time), with the exception of the Chom Thong district. The most affected neighborhoods include Nong Khaem district, Prawet, and Yai districts. According to local authorities, the ongoing air pollution episode is due to the current stagnant weather situation trapping the emission of vehicles' fine-particles. Authorities predict that the situation is likely to worsen on Saturday, December 22.

Context

Traffic congestion, railway and condominium construction, road works, as well as dry season weather are generally responsible for the worsening air quality in the Thai capital. Exposure to high levels of PM2.5 can lead to various health issues, such as eye and skin irritation and headaches, and can aggravate cardiac and respiratory conditions. Health authorities are urging the population to regularly check air pollution levels.

Advice

Individuals in Thailand, notably those particularly vulnerable to air pollution (children, the elderly, etc.), should limit outdoor activities until conditions normalize.
