UK: Right-wing protest and counterprotest scheduled in London December 9

Opposing groups plan protests in London on December 9; transportation disruptions and heightened security presence likely

Warning

Event

Two competing events are scheduled in London on Sunday, December 9: a right-wing pro-Brexit rally and a counterprotest. The UK Independence Party (UKIP) is planning a march, called "Brexit Betrayal Rally," from Park Lane by The Dorchester hotel to Parliament Street from 12:30 to 14:00 (local time). Rallies at Parliament Street must end at 15:30, according to local authorities. A counterprotest will also take place nearby, with demonstrators assembling at Portland Place at 12:00 before marching to Whitehall by 13:15. All crowds must disperse the Whitehall area by 16:30. Thousands of people are expected to participate in the rallies on Sunday.

Authorities will close roads along the march routes and congestion and related transportation disruptions are expected in the vicinity of the events. A heightened security presence is to be anticipated and police have warned participants not to engage in any violence. However, given the proximity of the protests, clashes between groups and subsequent arrests cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Individuals in London are advised to monitor the situation, avoid planned protest routes and large gatherings as a precaution, and anticipate transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence.
