Denmark: Train service disruptions persist on Great Belt Bridge Jan. 2 /update 1

Train services on the Great Belt Bridge between the islands of Funen and Zealand remain suspended as of the evening hours (local time) on Wednesday, January 2, following a deadly rail accident that killed at least six people. Emergency services responding to the crash site have been hampered by high winds, delaying investigation and clearing efforts. The E20 highway adjacent to the rail line has reopened with speed limitations of 50 km/h (31 mph) in place due to high winds. Significant transportation delays are to be expected in coming hours and days, including to commuter rail service to Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup Station.

Context

At least six people died in an accident on the Great Belt Bridge involving a high-speed commuter train and a freight train at approximately 07:30 on January 2. Rail officials indicate the passenger train involved in the incident was traveling between between Broby municipality and Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup Station. Police subsequently halted automobile and rail traffic for several hours and have imposed a photography ban in the vicinity of the crash.
