Car ramming attack in Bottrop injures four people on January 1; police attribute motive to anti-immigrant sentiments

Four people were injured, including one seriously, in Bottrop on Tuesday, January 1. A man was arrested in connection with the attack and two other similar failed attacks the same day. The assailant drove his car into pedestrians at a plaza in Bottrop's city center in the early hours (local time) of Tuesday before attempting to hit people waiting for a bus in Essen, a nearby city. Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime motivated by anti-immigrant sentiments.
