Masked gunmen allegedly affiliated with a political party contesting the Ayawaso West Wuogan by-election shot and wounded several people, including six who were critically wounded, at the La Bawalashie Presbyterian School polling center in Accra on Thursday, January 31. The shooting temporarily suspended voting at the site for around 45 minutes. The University of Ghana Hospital reportedly received 18 people injured in the incident. While voting ended at 17:00 (local time) and security forces have secured the area, heightened political tensions are to be expected in the area over the near term. Additional incidents of political violence cannot be ruled out.
