Teachers suspend nationwide strike on January 14; further strike possible

The Free Trade Union of Teachers and Researchers of Guinea (SELCG) announced on Sunday, January 13, the suspension of a three-month long strike following successful negotiations with the government. As such, classes resumed nationwide on Monday, January 14. However, according to the SELCG leader, the strike could resume by January 21, if no concrete measures are taken by the government by then.

Context

Numerous teacher strikes and related violent student protests were staged after teachers launched a strike on October 3, 2018. Teachers were demanding, among other things, higher salaries, which the government had previously refused to deliver.
