Fighting in Rakhine state between the military and the Arakan Army displaces at least 4500 people between early December and January 15; violence expected to continue

Ongoing fighting between the Arakan Army insurgent group and the military in Rakhine state has displaced at least 4500 people between early December 2018 and mid-January 2019, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Military aircraft and trucks have been arriving in the region since early January, following an attack on police posts in Buthidaung on January 4. Continued fighting is expected in the coming weeks.
Context
Clashes between Arakan Army militants and Burmese government forces have resumed in Rakhine state since December 2018. The Arakan Army seeks greater autonomy for Buddhists in Rakhine state.
