South Korea: Emergency pollution measures in place January 14-15

The Ministry of Environment enacted emergency measures to curb the effects of high pollution in Seoul and other cities on Monday, January 14, and Tuesday, January 15. Regulations include reduced power plant output, banning old diesel vehicles within city limits, closure of parking lots, and prohibiting half of all public official vehicles until measures are suspended. The government also urged residents to wear masks and limit outdoor activities. Pollution, particularly ultrafine particulate matter, is at "very unhealthy" levels and approximately 500 percent of the World Health Organization recommended levels.
