Iraq: VBIED leaves one dead and 12 wounded near Mosul University Feb. 28
Vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) detonation leaves at least one dead and a dozen others wounded near University of Mosul February 28; avoid the area
Event
A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) detonated in front of the University of Mosul on Thursday evening (local time), February 28, killing one person and wounding at least a dozen others. No claim of responsibility was immediately reported, but Islamic State (IS) fighters are known to operate in northern Iraq and attempt to carry out similar attacks. A heightened security presence is to be expected near the site of the attack over the coming hours. Avoid the affected area.
Context
While former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi claimed victory over the Islamic State (IS) group in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in western and northern Iraq.
Advice
Individuals in Mosul are advised to avoid the area of the blast, report suspicious objects and behavior to the police, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
