Oman: Health officials report four MERS-CoV cases as of late January

Event

The Omani Ministry of Health has announced that four confirmed cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) have been reported in recent weeks in the country. According to reports, a total of 18 cases of the disease have been recorded in Oman since 2013. Officials have urged residents to take precautions against the disease and to seek medical attention should they develop any of its symptoms. 

Context

Known disease vectors of MERS-CoV transmission include camels and, in rare cases, other humans. Symptoms of MERS-CoV include acute respiratory issues (e.g., shortness of breath), fever, cough, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. No vaccine is currently available.

Advice

All those present in Oman are advised to take necessary measures to protect themselves against contact with animals and individuals suspected of carrying the illness. People exhibiting the abovementioned symptoms are advised to seek immediate medical attention.
